Farmer Spotlight – Meet Sonny Yonce
Meet this month’s Farmer Spotlight, Sonny Yonce. Sonny oversees sales and marketing for J.W. Yonce & Sons. J.W. Yonce & Sons is a family owned and operated peach farm in Edgefield County. J.W., the founder, along with sons Larry and Sonny, and grandsons Chris and Josh, run the day-to-day operations of the farm. In addition to fresh peaches, the farm also grows asparagus, provides peach puree for R.J. Rockers “Son of a Peach” beer and specializes in frozen, sliced peaches so you can enjoy a sweet, SC peach year-round.
The Yonce family’s sports ties run as deep as their roots on the farm. Sonny played football for the South Carolina Gamecocks and coached with two hall-of-famers, Coach Pinky Babb of Greenwood and Coach Bettis Herlong of Saluda. Sonny’s brother Larry played football at Presbyterian as did grandsons Josh and Chris. Before college, Sonny and Larry played on two state championship football teams in high school. The brothers took the skills and work ethic they learned on the field and applied that team approach to ensure the growth and success of their family farm. Look for Big Smile peaches in a grocery store near you!
